The Loch Ness Monster has always held a special place in my heart. It was the very first roller coaster I remember riding as a child, and for years it remained one of my absolute favorite rides at Busch Gardens. There was something magical about that towering lift hill, the iconic interlocking loops, and the thrilling plunge into the dark tunnel with the classic helix.

As I got older, though, I started avoiding Nessie. The ride had become notoriously rough, that sharp, punishing turn right out of the first drop would rattle your teeth, and even the downward helix in the tunnel had grown almost unbearable. What was once a beloved childhood classic started feeling more like a punishment than a thrill.

That’s why I was both excited and a little nervous when I finally rode the newly refurbished Loch Ness Monster after its major 2024 restoration.

The good news? It’s noticeably smoother now. While it’s by no means a buttery smooth modern coaster, the retracking (over 900 feet of new steel track) has made a real difference. The worst of the head-banging and violent shaking has been tamed, making the ride far more enjoyable than it had been in recent years.

What really stands out, though, are the added effects and theming. The new dramatic storytelling, atmospheric sounds, lighting, and immersive elements do an excellent job of bringing back the classic “Loch Ness” atmosphere that made the ride feel so special in the first place. The refreshed queue, updated ride vehicles, and enhanced moments throughout the layout, especially around the drop and tunnel, help recapture that sense of wonder and mystery I loved as a kid.

It still has that signature Arrow coaster character, it’s got some bite and personality rather than feeling completely sanitized. The interlocking loops remain thrilling, and the overall experience now strikes a much better balance between nostalgia and rideability.

Final Verdict: The refurbished Loch Ness Monster successfully honors its legendary status while making meaningful improvements. It’s smoother, more atmospheric, and a lot easier on the body than it was before the refurb. For anyone who grew up riding Nessie or has been skipping it due to roughness, this updated version is absolutely worth getting back on. The legend lives on, and it’s riding better than it has in a long time.

Rating: 8/10 (A solid comeback for a true classic.)
